America is in a period of toxic discord and I think that it’s pretty easy to see that social media is a contributing factor. Perhaps, the defining factor. For example, Facebook’s own internal study showed that 80% of the people who found their way into an extremist Facebook Group were led there by the company’s own algorithms.
When the internet began I had hope that this technology would be a unifying place that would contribute to understanding diverse views. Instead, research is finding that we tend to enter like-minded tribes, surround ourselves with voices that confirm our own biases, and ignore differing voices.
So the question remains … is can social media heal us instead of divide us?
Sounds like a great topic for a podcast, right? And that’s exactly what you get this week from The Marketing Companion. Tune-in and listen to my little rant on this topic as well as some non-obvious trends coming out of the Pandemic Era.
